Line they always end up saying
“Would you all please show your appreciation to our bar team.”
How they got into hosting
Jamie May told me about a brilliant quiz at the Dead Pigeon that she'd been playing with friends, so I went along, and absolutely loved it. Then came lockdown when Marc was doing nightly online quizzes, and from that, I was hooked.
Once the pubs were back I was playing regularly, The Quiz People were expanding, and Marc asked Jamie if she thought her dad might like to become a host.
Having had years of experience DJing and playing in bands, and having “retired” from being a London taxi driver, I jumped at the chance, and haven't looked back.
On the mic
- Specialist subject
- Genesis, 1973–1980
- Would score nil on
- 21st-century music
- Favourite round to run
- Pinpoint
- Hardest to keep a straight face through
- Wordsnake. Wrong answers and the screams of teams panicking to get their answers in are just superb.
- Handling a rowdy room
- For non-players who like to shout answers out, I'll regularly just say “If you're going to shout out answers, could you at least shout out the correct ones?”
- Pre-quiz routine
- Music on shuffle, go out for a ciggie, then moan at teams who turn up two minutes before the quiz is supposed to start.
Nights they'll never forget
- Best night hosted
- Probably 100+ players at The Hatch Market.
- Funniest wrong answer
- An “only finger” in Fast Track where the answer was the scientist Ernest Rutherford. Asked for the correct answer, and was given Ernest Hemingway.
- Best technical disaster
Nothing that couldn't be dealt with. A dead router at The Greedy Banker, easily swapped out for a spare. Fire alarms at the Hungry Fox forcing everyone into the car park.
Another was when an accident closed the M2 on my way to the Hungry Fox. I phoned ahead to say I was going to be late. Hayley went round to collect the entry fees, I set up in record time, started the quiz 45 minutes late, but finished by the normal time.
- Closest finish called
- Lots of tiebreakers
Teams they look out for
- 1
- Only Popped In for a Pint
- 2
- Missing Dave
- 3
- No One Likes Us We Don't Care
- What makes them worth turning up for
- Always at the quiz for the fun of it.

Off the mic
- The rest of the week
- Mainly spreadsheet stuff for The Quiz People and F.A.I.G.
- Round they'd add to every quiz
- A “last man standing” round, where a wrong answer kicks you out until one team is left.
- Advice to a team that never quite wins
- Your time will come.
